Best Antivirus - Does Free Software Work As Well As Paid?

Like many people I thought that my computer was well protected against viruses and other malicious software by the name brand antivirus software that was included with the computer when I bought it.

I browsed the Internet with no problem and everything seemed to work smoothly until one day something took over my machine. Random sounds and music began playing and the screen would flicker. Little cartoon characters would briefly appear on the screen. Yikes. What had infected my computer?

I cleared the browser cache, shut down the computer, and rebooted. The thing was still there. I ran a complete scan using the antivirus software that came with the computer. It did not find the problem.

I was still able to access the Internet, so I started searching for better antivirus software. I wasn't looking for a casual recommendation on a forum or someone's blog. I wanted to find some test results from a recognized authority. I was looking for an antivirus program with high detection rates, whether it was free or required payment.

I found that testing antivirus software is a specialized business now. Even the people at PC Magazine said that they don't do their own tests with live viruses. They rely on tests conducted by independent testing labs, including AV-Comparatives, AV-Test, ICSA Labs, Virus Bulletin, and West Coast Labs.

These independent testing labs have reliable data on detection rates for both free and paid antivirus software. However not all of these testing labs have user-friendly websites for the general public.

Virus Bulletin conducts independent testing of antivirus software and makes some of the results available on their website without charge, but they require a subscription fee of $175 per year to access all of their test reports.

ICSA Labs provides a list of antivirus products that they have certified, but I was not able to find a ranking of how well the programs performed in comparison to each other. A simple list of certified products is not that useful for people looking to identify the best antivirus software.

West Coast Labs provides independent testing of antivirus software for their clients who are mostly the developers of the software. The developers probably receive detailed reports on how their products compare to others, but I found only a check mark type certification of products on the West Coast Labs website. Again this is not that helpful to those looking for a ranking of the best antivirus software.

AV-Comparatives is a testing organization based in Innsbruck, Austria and they provide antivirus testing for clients in an arrangement similar to that of West Coast Labs. However AV-Comparatives appears to make much more of their raw data available to visitors of their website. They do provide a ranking of virus detection rates. However there were only 16 programs tested in the recent report I viewed.

AV-Test is an independent software testing lab based in Magdeburg, Germany and is associated with a University located there. PC Magazine refers to AV-Test as one of the top research facilities in the world for testing antivirus software. AV-Test has test results for 30 antivirus programs.

I did not want to spend all day searching for information while my computer was making strange noises so I selected an antivirus program with a high ranking from AV-Test and downloaded it.

The new antivirus software quickly located the malicious program on my computer and automatically removed it. I had selected a paid program because it was ranked very highly, and I thought I might need customer support. However some free software is ranked very high at virus detection by AV-Test. And they gave a very low detection score to the commercial antivirus software that came with my computer. That did not surprise me. I should have checked with them earlier.

All five of these testing labs are worth checking for current information on both free and paid antivirus software. There is a great deal of information to sort through and more things to consider beyond detection rates. For instance, programs often rank differently on proactive defense, where they attempt to identify virus behavior before a virus has been identified and added to the signature database. This is becoming more important as new viruses proliferate.

Anti Virus - Protect Yourself

There are so many great things about the internet you know that there is going to be problems. And there are! Identity theft, fraud, and maybe the largest most problematic is the epidemic of computer viruses that are wreaking havoc. These viruses are different scripts (if you can call them that) written for purposes of destruction. It is the classic "minority of trouble makers ruining it for the vast majority of the rest of us." So what sorts of viruses do we worry about and get anti virus programs for.

Well, there are all sorts of different kinds of virus-type things traveling around in cyber space and require the protection of an anti virus tool. Examples include worms, spiders, spyware, and adware. They have a variety of effects ranging from pure destruction to actually taking sensitive information off of a computer's hard drive.

Spyware is an example of the latter effect. It is designed to come in via the internet (usually involves a download of some sort) and to search through the hard drive looking for sensitive and profitable information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and online preferences, and search or surf histories. The potential for badness with these is very real and very worth getting protection in the form of anti virus software tool for.

Anyway, as you may or may not know, there has been a new revolution of security (anti virus) software in response to this new demand for online security. This software ranges widely in both price and effectiveness. The software also generally offers both "treatment" and prevention of computer viral infections. That is to say that there is usually a scanning feature offered that is able to detect old infestations and to either quarantine them or sometimes it can actually repair the damage. The other feature then is to disallow new infestations. This prevention is accomplished with daily scanning of anything new, for example downloads or email, and warning user of anything suspicious and recommending action.

My recommendation is to get a more well known software package and be willing to spend a bit, because after all "you pay for what you get." Good bets are the anti virus software tools that are sold in computer, office supply, or electronic stores. You want to look and make sure that it has an automatic on line updates that allow your protection to stay as up-to-date as possible.

Major Geeks Review

I can't seem to remember where I found this site but Major Geeks has been extremely useful to me over the past year or so. I've had numerous problems with my computer and this site has helped me out on all of those occasions.

If you haven't clicked on the link already, Major Geeks is a site that hosts downloads which allow you to tweak and help clear up your computer. For those of you that have read my guide on spyware then you'll already know that there is a lot of crap out there and it can be a right pain to get rid of. Also, as your computer gets older, it slows down a lot. Major Geeks intends to help you cure these problems and much more by the files that they offer.

Now, I've suggested this site to people who have had problems with their computer but they immediately get turned off because the look of the site is a bit 'dodgy' or it 'seems a bit suspicious'. I admit that it isn't the best colour scheme out there but I bet that it saves them a lot of money since they don't have to upload as many images as say Gamespot or IGN. The colours reflect the army-like name with the greens and browns.

On the homepage, you have a list to the various sections of the site down the left, links to useful parts of the site on your left as well as other useful links at the top. In the middle of the page, you have the latest content that has been uploaded to the site which includes downloads, news, reviews of PC parts and some weird news that they like to add to the site which I will come back to later. This is extremely easy to use and you also have the search box just below the main menu if you want to find something quickly.

Some examples of the content that they offer are items such as the latest anti-virus updates for Norton and other companies. Programs such as Google Earth and Celestia which you can download for fun. Paint.Net for those of you that want to create graphics for free and BitComet for the people that want an excellent torrent program. Like I said, these are just a few examples and you can choose between freeware programs which are free to use and download or shareware programs which you need to pay to use.

You might be thinking, "How do I know that the files offered by this site are safe to use?" Answer: You don't but Major Geeks test every program that they put on their website for spyware and viruses and they reccomend that you also scan the programs with your own anti-virus and spyware programs too.

As for the other parts of the website, you have a forum full of people who know what they're talking about. Topics range from problems with your internet to help on how to get the best out of your computer. These forums are probably one of the first places you should go to should something happen to your computer that you have no idea how to fix. The forum also has its own Arcade which you need to register to use but is an easy way to waste 20-30 minutes.

Major Geeks also have their own merchandise should you want to support the site and show your friends that there's more to you than they think.

My favourite part of the site is the 'Way Off Base' news that they have. This holds all the weird news that users have submitted to the site over the years and most of it is defnitely worth looking at. Some will make you wonder how that thing could've happened, laugh until your sides hurt or could just be some video of Ronaldinho showing off his football skills. For example, this piece of news made me wonder how on earth that could've happened and it did provide a bit of light reading for me. It's all very interesting stuff.

In conclusion, Major Geeks follows the saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover'. This book doesn't look like much but its content will capture you for months on end.

Anti Virus Test Program

How often do you test your anti virus program to check that it is functioning correctly?

There is a very simple way to check any anti virus program, simply go to eicar and download the test file.

IMPORTANT: This is NOT a real virus and can do no damage

The following files were created by the European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research - EICAR - so that users could physically test the effectiveness of their chosen anti virus product.

Read the page carefully. There are four options to download using the standard http protocol and four for using the secure, SSL enabled https protocol.

The first file contains an ASCII string, the second file is a copy using a different filename, the third is contained within a zip archive folder and the fourth contains the third zip file within a zip archive folder. This is to see if your anti virus will scan deeper than just the first level.

Any good anti virus program will stop you from downloading any of these and will inform you that 'A Virus Was Found' and abort the connection. Others will allow you to download any of the files and save them to a folder from where you open them. Upon opening, your anti virus should warn you that a virus has been found and you should choose the option to put it into quarantine.

You can also write the ASCII characters in Notepad and save the file as 'eicar.com' and again your anti virus should warn you that a virus has been found and you should quarantine it.

When you have run any of the tests delete any eicar files that you have saved and also delete them from quarantine.

How To Secure Your Computer

According to a Software security and Antivirus company Symantec, it only takes 20 minutes for an unprotected computer to be attacked once it gets connected with the internet. Computer security cannot be compromised because if your computer is insecure then all your data, software and hardware are at risk. There are several methods that are used to combat with the security threats. The known threats to a computer are viruses, spyware, adware, malware, Trojan horses, internet security threats, accidental files deletion and data corruption, unauthorized access to compute and the hackers' attacks. Following tips tells that how to deal with the computer security threats.

Install Up-to-dated Antivirus Program

One of the most important security step and preventive measure is to install an up-to-dated antivirus program and scan your computer regularly with it. An antivirus programs acts as protective shield for your computer against the virus, spyware and other internet threats.

Install Firewall

A firewall is a protective boundary that protects your computer from the unauthorized access and from the hackers' attacks. If you haven't enabled a firewall software or hardware on your gateway computer then anyone can get into your computer.

Install Anti spyware

Installing a good anti spyware program eliminates the chances of data corruption, Windows registry corruption, slow computer booting, browser's hijack and applications failure. The combination of Antivirus + Anti Spyware + Firewall program is a very good choice.

Update your operating system with service packs and patches

Services packs and the security patches fix the security holes and other vulnerabilities in the operating systems. If you are using Windows based operating system then there is automatic update option in the control panel of the Windows and you can set schedule updates of the operating system from the Microsoft's website.

Beware of suspicious emails and attachments

Suspicious emails and email attachments is a very common cause of the viruses. The best safety measures it not to open the suspicious emails from the unknown source.

Uninstall Unnecessary Programs

For getting the optimized performance from your computer, uninstall all the unwanted programs and delete temporary internet files. You will notice increased performance of your computer.

Deploy Encryptions

Another important security measure is to prevent your important files with the encryption. Also for protecting your important data from accidental deletion, make your files to read only.

The above mentioned tips provide the best safeguard against the known offline and online threats.

Totally Free Antivirus Programs

So what exactly are the best and most respected totally free antivirus programs on the web today? To answer this question briefly there simply are not any and I will tell you exactly why.It is widely known today that many free virus removal applications are infectious and have the ability to cause further damage and corruption to your operating system if used. This is because large amounts of them are created by malicious programmers or hackers who are able to target large amounts of people as there is quite obviously a huge demand for free tools in this niche. So with this in mind don't bother trying to search for totally free antivirus programs anymore as you know what the consequences are if you use one.

Virus infections are available on the web in the thousands and the most common ways in which they are able to access your computer system are via downloads, software exchanging, emails and networks. So even if you are not a constant web surfer or don't have the internet at all you are still at risk of becoming infected with a computer virus.Once these infections reside in memory they can delete system files and shortcuts, cause program instability, modify and embed malicious entries in the registry, cause windows crashes and even remove all the contents of you hard drive in a short space of time.

In order to remove virus or trojan horse infections you must avoid totally free antivirus programs and use paid ones as they have more benefits and provide reassurance to you as a person.Totally free antivirus programs will not be able to repair detected infections, will use up large portions of memory as well as resources and as stated above could potentially infect every single file that they scan instead of curing them.

If you are searching for a high quality virus removal application then I can highly recommend Xoftspyse which is very popular on the web today and is capable of removing spyware, adware, viruses and trojan horses. If you are interested in obtaining the latest version you can download it directly at the link below.
